As we journey through Advent, we are reminded of the themes of hope, love, joy, and peace. This special season invites us to pause and reflect on the light of Christ in our lives and the ways we can bring that light to others. At St Cuthbert's Catholic School, these values are not just words; they are lived out daily in our interactions, our celebrations, and our care for one another. Advent reminds us of the beauty of togetherness and the importance of fostering a community rooted in love and faith.
Walking into St Cuthbert's, you are greeted not just by the sights and sounds of a busy school but by a palpable warmth and sense of belonging. It’s a place where everyone feels included and welcomed, whether they have been here for a decade or a day. This culture of support and love is what makes our school truly special.
For me, St Cuthbert's has been more than a workplace; it has been my second home for over seven years. My time here is punctuated by moments of joy, laughter, and a profound sense of belonging. It is a place where I have grown, both personally and professionally, and where I have had the privilege of being part of a vibrant and caring community.

As I prepare to leave St Cuthbert's, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a mixture of emotions. To the wonderful staff who have become not just colleagues but friends, thank you for your unwavering support and encouragement. You have helped shape the teacher and leader I am today, and I will miss you greatly. To the beautiful students and families of St Cuthbert's, you are the heart and soul of this community. Your kindness, resilience, and dedication make this school the special place it is.
Though my journey at St Cuthbert's is coming to an end, the memories and lessons I take with me will remain a cherished part of my life. Thank you for the privilege of being part of this extraordinary community. As we continue through Advent, may we all carry forward the spirit of hope, love, joy, and peace in our hearts and in all we do.
Warm regards and a heartfelt farewell
Mrs Melissa Thirgood

Step Up Day
Last Wednesday our students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 participated in step up day. This day, although full of nerves, was full of opportunities for our students to show resilience and grit, to ‘struggle gently’. By the end of the morning there were lots of smiles and even new friendships as they got a taster for what their 2025 class would be like. I would like to thank our teachers for all their preparation in the lead up to this day to ensure all our students felt welcomed and valued in their new classrooms.

Thanksgiving Liturgy
To end a wonderful year at St. Cuthbert's, our Thanksgiving Liturgy was held at the Church of the Incarnation yesterday. The church was bursting at the seams with the presence of so many parents, siblings, grandparents and family members. Father Kasun joined us for a most beautiful occasion, where, as a whole school community, we were able to thank God for what has been a fantastic year in our little school. Our Grade Six Lantern leaders welcomed the community, giving thanks and special mentions to our staff who continually make our school exceptional. For the Gospel reading, Preps delivered the Nativity in a heart warming way.
Huge thanks must go to each and every student who played a part in our Liturgy, for being so respectful during the Liturgy and to Father Kasun for making the time to spend with us.
As the Religious Educator Coordinator at St. Cuthbert's, I would take this opportunity to thank all students and families for their charitable contributions throughout the year and for the way you continually live out the light of Christ, sharing it with others along your path.
Have a joyous and blessed Christmas.

Vinnie's Giving Tree, 2024
Our Giving Tree is looking absolutely beautiful, with lots of wonderful presents underneath it! A huge thank you to our very generous school families for their donations so far. We’re thrilled to have a fantastic representative, Elle, who will be coming to collect all the presents at 12pm on Monday, 16th December. Families are more than welcome to continue placing presents under the tree until that time. Once again, a huge and ginormous thank you for your incredible generosity!
Kinder Nativities
Definitely a highlight of our whole school year here at St Cuthbert’s - the Kinder Nativity. Partly written by themselves and choosing their own roles, the Kinders threw themselves into their performance with gusto. One particular highlight: when Mary told Joseph that she was going to have a baby and he replied: ‘Awesome’. A big thank you to the Kinder team for their time and effort they put into this special event.

Musical Showcase and Choir events
In the last few weeks of school our Music Department (aka Mrs Volkmann) has been very busy indeed. We have had the Prep - Grade 2 Musical Showcase, followed by the Grade 3 - 6 Showcase. The students performed a range of songs on a variety of instruments. Both events were enthusiastically supported by our families and it was wonderful to see how many people could attend these special events.
The Choir have also been a part of several events, including:
- Singing LIVE on the ABC Radio. Including being interviewed
- A special Performance at Derwent Views Retirement Village, where they were so good they were asked to do an encore
- Performing at the ‘Carols by the Beach’ at Bellerive
We are very proud of the hardwork and talents that our students have displayed during these opportunities.
Triathlon
On Friday the 29 November a number of our Grade 3-6 students participated in the
Schools Triathlon Challenge at Bellerive. Some students competed individually - completing a swim, bike ride and run by themselves. Others took part as a team, completing one of these events. Our students competed against a large number of other schools and we definitely held our own. Big thanks to the staff and parents who transported bikes, set up the marquee and cheered our students on.
School Counsellors
This term we have welcomed our new school counsellor Fleur. Fleur is replacing Angela, and she will work alongside Olivia. Fleur works Monday and Wednesday and Olivia is here on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Welcome Fleur!
New Equipment
Lunch times are as entertaining as ever at St Cuthbert’s with a burst of activity on our fake grass area thanks to an injection of new equipment. Students can be seen happily playing alongside each other, across grade levels, sharing and taking turns. Thank you to Miss Mitchell for her efforts in organising this for us.

Pre-Kinder Parent Session with Lisa Ford
On Wednesday the 27th November we had clinical psychologist Lisa Ford in to run a parent session for our Kinder families of 2025.

Fire Safety Week
Last week we had Firefighter Drew in to run our Fire Safety sessions. Students from Prep to Grade 6 attended a number of lessons, completed their own fire safety plans for their homes and were presented with a certificate for their participation. Kinder had a visit from Drew to see all the equipment and ask lots of clever questions.
Grade 6 Big Day Out
Recently St Cuthbert's students, Eli (Prep), Gio, Harvey, Rocco, Seb, Sunny and Tommy (Grade 1) played Futsal this year for the first time and have remained undefeated all season. They are playing in the final this Friday at 4:15pm at Aurora Stadium in New Town. Goodluck guys!
A reminder of our updated Uniform Policy which we are moving towards being fully in place from the beginning of next year. This can we found here:
A reminder that ALL children’s hair must be tied back if it is falling below the collar.
Leggings
The uniform committee have been actively searching for a provider that we can recommend to our families for the purchase of leggings. We are pleased to communicate that School Active Sports, an online company, sell Forest Green 3/4 length leggings for $39.95 and full length leggings for $49.95. Postage of these is approximately $10. We have purchased the following sizes: size 4 and size 6 if families would like to come to the office to gauge sizing, but according to current families who have already purchased these the sizes are smaller than normal so it is recommended to go up a size for your child. One of our committee members did contact the company and they can also custom make bigger sizes that are not listed on their website. Please see link below to purchase:
3/4 Length Leggings: https://schoolactivesports.com.au/collections/girls-3-4-school-sports-leggings/products/girls-forest-green-3-4-leggings?variant=28928543555664
