Principal’s Report
Hector Chundaloo was born in Turkey Creek in the Warmun Community in the Kimberley. He was a talented bush artist, Dreamtime story teller, station hand and a stock camp cook on many cattle drives out of Texas Downs and Rosewood Stations, en-route to the facilities at Wyndham. He died in 2006.
Hector’s painting of Mary MacKillop has Mary, at the centre of the picture who is the Manampurra, the dreamtime person, a spiritual leader, as special lady like Our Lady, Jesus' mother. The bush tucker minyjiwarra (bush plum tree) on either side of Mary is a sign of how her spirit nourishes the Australian people, of how she follows the Ngapuny way (God's way). Mary calls us to follow her spirit and join her in heaven when we die. The hill country represents her different camping places here on earth.
Dear Parent/Guardians
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
“Never see a need without
doing something about it.”
Mary
MacKillop
We belatedly celebrated the feast of Mary MacKillop (August 8) with a beautiful prayer service presented by our Grade 2/3 class at last week’s assembly.
As Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop has gifted our country with a rich educational legacy. In Tasmania we have a very close bond to Mary. The order of nuns in which she co-founded with Father Julian Tenison Woods, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, administered and established schools all around the state of Tasmania.
Mary MacKillop had a deep affinity with the poor and the marginalised and continually expressed God’s compassionate love for all in her ministries. At St Cuthbert’s we feel that it is important that our students have a rich understanding of this legacy and continue to strive to live out the values demonstrated by Mary MacKillop in their daily lives.
Feast of the Assumption of Mary
On Tuesday, students from Kinder to Grade Six attended Mass at The Church of the Incarnation to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. This feast is one of the few Holy Days of Obligation remaining in the Liturgical Calendar where all Catholics are expected to attend Mass and celebrate the importance of Mary as a figure of devotion.
St Cuthbert’s students who recently received the Sacrament of Confirmation were acknowledged with a gift from the school during the Mass.
We thank Father Peter for celebrating this special occasion with our community.
Book Week
Next week is “Book Week”. Each year across Australia, The CBCA (The Children’s Book Council of Australia) brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Children’s Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature.
This year at St Cuthbert’s each class has chosen one picture book to focus on. The theme for 2017 is, “Escape to Everywhere”. Classes will explore the themes and concepts from chosen books and will then share their learning with the rest of the school by means of classroom visits.
Some of our classes will also be visiting the Rosny LINC as part of the festivities.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Stephanie and Tristan Cripps on the birth of Harry, a beautiful baby boy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this joyful time in your lives.
