Prayer and Reflection
Advent
This weekend we began the liturgical season of Advent. The name Advent (From the Latin word Adventus, which signifies a coming) is applied, in the Catholic Church, to that period of the year, during which the Church requires the faithful to prepare for the celebration of the Feast of Christmas, the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Advent Calendar is part of the tradition of this Catholic season and part of the tradition in broader secular society. The origin of the Advent Calendar can be traced back to the 19th Century. The first known Advent Calendar which was made by handwork is from the year 1851. Other early styles were the Advent clock or the Advent candle - a candle for each of the 24 days until Christmas, like today’s Advent wreath. So in religious families little pictures were hung up on the wall - one for each day in December. Another tradition was to paint chalk strokes on the door, one per day until Christmas Eve.
The Advent calendar above provides a focus of preparation for each of the days of December.
The following reflection from Pope Benedict XVI encapsulates the essence of this season.
"Advent is concerned with that very connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man. Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child. This is a healing memory; it brings hope. The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that it can discern the star of hope.…
It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope."
Pope Benedict XVI
I pray that in the busyness of our lives that our community can find the time and space to reflect in the joy and hope of the Advent season.

Dear Parents and Guardians
Loose Parts Clean Up Day
We had a very productive “Working Be” on Saturday cleaning up the space next to the Parents and Friends storeroom in readiness for our Loose Parts Play program. Thank you to those staff members and parents who gave up their time to give us a hand. There are some items for sale following the clean-up. See Mr. John Sawyer for further details.
Lindisfarne Lights and Carols Festival
On Saturday night members from our choir joined students from Montagu Bay Primary, Lindisfarne Primary and Lindisfarne North Primary to sing at the inaugural Lindisfarne Lights and Carols in Beltana Park. The event was originally scheduled to occur in the park, however due to inclement weather was later moved to the Activity Hall. These last minute changes failed to dampen the enthusiasm of a very appreciative crowd and a wonderful evening of carol singing was enjoyed by all. We thank Mrs. Angela Coutts for the invitation and Mrs. Ruth Freeman for organising our choir students.
This is a very busy time of the year for our choir and harmony students. Next week on Tuesday, December 12 our “Harmony Group” has been invited to sing live on the ABC radio at 9.30am. Make sure you tune in for a listen.
Our Choir will be performing on Thursday, December 14 at the Salvation Army Housing Christmas Function at the Lindisfarne Motor Yacht Club. We wish them well.
Enrolment 2018
We have a limited number of places available in classes Prep to Grade 6 for 2018. If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining us at St Cuthbert’s, please ask them to contact the office for an enrolment package.
Emergency Practice
Within the next two weeks we will hold an emergency practise with staff and students to test our response to a lockdown procedure.
Teachers will review plans and social stories to ensure that all students are as well prepared as possible for this event. You may wish to speak to your child to reassure them that we practise these procedures to ensure the safety of everyone in our community.
If you have queries about this process do not hesitate to contact school.
