Principal’s Report

Dear Parents / Guardians

This week we celebrate St Patrick’s Day (March 17) on Friday with our annual St Patrick’s Day parade. Like many Australians the St Cuthbert’s Catholic School community has close connections with the Irish Saint. We encourage everyone to get into the spirit of the day and expect to see the playground awash with green!

Six Things You Should Know About St Patrick!

  1. March 17th marks St. Patrick’s Day, the Catholic feast day for the patron saint of Ireland, who died on that day in the 5th century.
  2. Patrick was not Irish but was born in Wales in about AD 385 and for much of his youth did not practice the Catholic faith. He considered himself a pagan until the age of 16 when he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village and brought to Ireland. During his 6 year captivity, he became closer to God.
  3. He did not remain in Ireland but instead escaped to Gaul (France) where he studied for the priesthood. In a dream he saw “all the children of Ireland from their mothers’ wombs stretching out their hands” to him. He understood this as his calling to convert the Irish Druids to Christianity.
  4. His name was originally Maewyn. He took the Christian name of Patrick after becoming a Catholic.
  5. St. Patrick did not drive all the snakes from Ireland into the Irish Sea (Although some still say that this is why the sea is so rough). Snakes have never been indigenous to Ireland. Snakes are possibly a code word for the devil here. Some have also claimed that Patrick raised people from the dead. While many miracles have been attributed to Patrick this legend is, as the Irish say “a bunch of malarkey.”
  6. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died on March 17 around the year 461.

Catholic Education Week

This year from 17th – 23rd March, 2018, St Cuthbert’s will join with Catholic schools across Tasmania to celebrate Catholic Education Week (CEW).

Catholic Education Week is about forging and strengthening relationships between everyone who has a stake in our schools – students, staff, families, priests, parishioners, and members of the wider community – by showcasing our activities and actions.

During Catholic Education Week, we have a number of activities planned. These include:

  • Saturday 17th March 6pm – Vigil Mass The Church of the Incarnation, Lindisfarne.
We invite families to attend our local mass celebrated by Father Peter O’Loughlin.
  • Monday 19th March – Caritas Leaders Colouring Competition
The Grade Six Leaders will be distributing colouring pages to raise money for Project Compassion. Entries will be 50c and students may enter multiple times.
  • Tuesday 20th March 9.30am – Feast of St Cuthbert
Students in Prep – Grade 6 will attend Mass at the Church of the Incarnation to celebrate the feast of St Cuthbert. The St Cuthbert’s Scholar Award will be presented at this Mass. All members of our school community are warmly invited to attend.
  • Wednesday 21st March – Zooper Doopers
The Grade Six Caritas Leaders will be selling Zooper Dooper icey poles at Recess to raise money for Project Compassion.
    Cost $1.00
  • Thursday 22nd March – Catholic Education Day
11.00am Grade 5 students attending Catholic Education Week Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral.
1.00pm Visit to St Cuthbert’s by Archbishop Julian Porteous for sausage sizzle and tour of the school. No cost to families. Special thanks to the Parents and Friends for organising volunteers to help with the BBQ.
  • Friday 23rd March 11.30am – Catholic Education Week Cup
Annual Staff vs Students netball match.

This is an ideal opportunity to support our community of St Cuthbert’s and learn more about the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.

Our school has a supportive and talented community of teachers, parents, carers, P&F, clergy, parishioners and support staff who work together to give students the best education possible.

This special week on the Catholic Schools’ calendar provides an opportunity for the community to recognise our committed and gifted teachers and support staff for their work in encouraging success, promoting discipline, supporting creativity and instilling compassion in our young people.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support of St Cuthbert’s and look forward to celebrating Catholic Education Week with you.

Birth to Four

St Cuthbert's Early Years Learning program Little Lanterns ran its first session on Friday, launching straight into Under the Sea.

Numerous opportunities were provided inside, including making jelly fish, exploring an under the sea landscape, sailing away in a yellow submarine as well as the normal activities of play dough, free painting, writing and colouring and many more.

Outside, children were provided an under the sea inspired water play as well as building with our large lego, the mud kitchen, building sandcastles and exploring the playground. Students enjoyed building sandcastles and knocking them down and going fast down the big Kinder slide.

This week, Little Lanterns is getting a little grubby and slimy, with insect week. Little Lanterns runs every Friday during the school Term from 9am to 11am in our school Kindergarten. Please bring a piece of fruit to share and a gold coin donation. We hope you can join us!

Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in this year’s Swimming Carnival. From all reports there was some very enthusiastic competition and some excellent individual performances.

A big thank you to Mr Sandy Clark for once again doing an outstanding job with the organisation and running of the carnival. Thank you also to staff and helpers who assisted as marshals, scorers, timekeepers and judges.

Condolences

We offer our sincere condolences to Mrs Lee Carrick, whose husband, Chris, died suddenly last weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lee and her family at this sad time.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord
and may perpetual light shine upon him
May he rest in peace

Year 7 Enrolment Process

Message from the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office

To assist families with the transition process from primary to secondary schools the 2018 Year 7 enrolment process has been broadened to allow families of students in Years 5 and 6 to commence the enrolment process for Year 7 in Catholic education. Therefore, advertisements will be circulated shortly opening up the enrolment process for Year 6 students who will commence Year 7 in 2019 and Year 5 students who will commence Year 7 in 2020. This process will continue to be based on the TCEC Enrolment Policy, which can be accessed by the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office Website in the link below. In opening up this process we hope it will provide an opportunity for families to discuss any concerns they have about their child’s transition and provide certainty around their ongoing education pathway into Year 7.
