Prayer and Reflection

Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday. The word Pentecost comes from the Greek for fiftieth day. Pentecost Sunday ends the season of Easter and comes as a Sabbath day after seven weeks of seven days. In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is celebrated as the arrival of the Spirit, promised by Jesus, that animated the disciples to spread the gospel of Jesus and gather believers to form what would eventually become the Church.

It is challenging to define what we mean by “Spirit”. Like the wind, we often see the effects rather than the entity itself. Bishop Joseph McKinney speaks of the Spirit in the following the following terms:

"The Holy Spirit has been described as 'God's electricity'. There are many different ways in which electricity is used: the toaster toasts bread, the iron presses clothes, the light bulb gets bright, the television gives pictures, the fan moves air around and the air conditioner cools the air.

All of these are different ways in which electricity is used, but none works without electricity. The electricity is the same but there is a great variety of ways in which it can be used. We are like that. When we receive the Sacraments of the Church, we are connected with God, the power source. We live life to the full. Confirmation, through the gifts of the Spirit that we receive, plays a key role in helping us to live with gusto."

Bishop Joseph McKinney

At St Cuthbert’s, we encourage all of our students to be switched on to the Spirit of Jesus. The Spirit of Jesus is something that we can feel in our hearts and see through other people. It manifests itself in many ways, through acts of kindness, charity, friendship, forgiveness, encouragement and welcome. The Spirit of Jesus is the everyday positive things that you see and hear people say and do.

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents / Guardians

Welcome

This week we welcome Caroline Conallin in Grade 3/4 Blue. Caroline is a student at UTAS and will be completing her second professional placement as part of her Bachelor of Education Degree. Caroline will be with us for the next 6 weeks.

We also welcome former student, Katee Smith. Katee is a Grade 9 student from Ogilvie High School. Katee will join us in Grade 1/2 every Tuesday for the remainder of Term 2 as part of her work experience internship.

NAPLAN

Last week our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

NAPLAN tests also provide schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

A NAPLAN report for each child will be issued later in the year.

Quiz Night

Our Parents and Friends are running a Quiz Night on Saturday, June 16. I would like to take the opportunity to encourage as many people as possible to come along. If last year’s event is any indication, it is a great evening of fun, frivolity and festivity. Seriously, it’s a wonderful community event and a great opportunity for our newer parents to get to know others.

Student Free Day

The first day of Term 3, July 23 will be a student free day. St Cuthbert’s Catholic School Staff will be attending professional learning at MacKillop College.

Parking

We have a serious issue with people parking incorrectly in Moirunna Road. Driveways and No Standing Zones must be kept clear at all times. Access needs to be maintained for students with disabilities. Drivers risk receiving an infringement notice if they continue to park illegally.
