Prayer and Reflection

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Guardians

"Some of us learn from the mistakes of other people. The rest of us are the other people." Author Unknown.

At the end of a very busy week at school I happened to come across this quote in an article from our Executive Director, John Mula in his “communique” to Catholic Staff around the subject of adversity. His words resonated deeply with me and with his permission I share with you now:

In its own quirky way this statement offers us a prime piece of reality: we will never have life completely under control; we will make mistakes and sometimes adversity will come to us through events or other people. What's important is how we deal with adversity and how we assist our children to deal with it in their lives.

Adversity either builds or destroys. It builds us if we are strong enough to withstand its pressures and wise enough to learn from the experience. It destroys us if we lose faith in ourselves and in the innate strength of our human spirit, our wondrous capacity to survive against the odds.

So what are the options when adversity knocks on our door? Are we hard and strong but when adversity comes along we wilt? Are we usually soft at heart but become hardened as a result of some adversity? Or do we use adversity itself to be better versions of ourselves?

Adversity has many differing forms; the death of someone close, divorce, loss of employment, break up of a close friendship, illness or professional tensions in the workplace. Whatever its form, it can threaten the stability of our lives, can lead to anxiety, frustration, feelings of helplessness, sense of inadequacy no matter if we are adult or child.

We need to stay positive and realise that as Christian people we have within us the gifts of the Holy Spirit and Christ's encouragement to "come to me, all of you who are burdened and I will give you rest." St Paul built on this invitation when, in his second letter to the people of Corinth, he gave a brief catalogue of his personal misfortunes. He was beaten, whipped, stoned and left for dead, shipwrecked, rejected, persecuted and had a recurring illness. Yet, in spite of these many adverse happenings, Paul was able to tell the Corinthians, "In the full light of truth we live in God's sight... We are often troubled but not crushed; Sometimes in doubt but never in despair; Though badly hurt at times we are not destroyed."

Quiz Night

A big thank you to our Parents and Friends Association for organizing another fantastic Quiz Night on Saturday night. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community in attendance. On behalf of the school community I would particularly like to thank the executive and their helpers for their hard work ensuring that we all had such an enjoyable evening. We would especially like to thank Mr. Chris Topham for doing such great job as emcee and Mr. Oliver Balzer for being our quiz master on the evening. Finally, we thank all the businesses and sponsors from our local community for their generosity in supporting our school.

Student Free Day

The first day of Term 3, July 23 will be a student free day. St Cuthbert’s Catholic School Staff will be attending professional learning at MacKillop College.

Parking / Drop Off-Pick Up

We have had a serious issue with people parking incorrectly in Moirunna Road. Driveways and No Standing Zones must be kept clear at all times. Access needs to be maintained for students with disabilities. Drivers risk receiving an infringement notice if they continue to park illegally.

At the end of last week, you may have noticed the police presence at Drop Off and Pick-up time. The major concern from the police is that traffic continues to flow along Corinna Road at these times. To assist with this, parents and guardians are asked to only pull into the drop-off / pick-up area if there is sufficient room. If this is not the case, we ask that you continue along Corinna Road and around the block.

Your cooperation we these matters is greatly appreciated.

Quiz Night

Thank you to everyone that came along to the quiz night. It was a very fun and entertaining night, with many dressed in their best 80’s gear. The quiz master, Oliver Balzer did an excellent job of getting a good mix of questions for everyone to answer. Our MC for the night, Chris Topham did an outstanding job once again. He kept everyone on their toes to win spot prizes throughout the night.

I would like to thank all the businesses that donated or sponsored out event. It is greatly appreciated. All money raised through this event will go towards resources and activities for all the school. We are still waiting on a final figure but have raised around $3000.
