Prayer and Reflection
One Pace Beyond
(written about Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Sisters)
Take down your lantern from its niche and go out!
You may not rest in firelight certainties,
Secure from drifting of doubt and fear.
You may not build yourself confining walls
And say: “Thus far, and thus, and thus far shall I walk,
And these things shall I do, and nothing more.”
Go out! For need calls loudly in the winding lanes
And you must seek Christ there.
Your pilgrim heart
Shall urge you still one pace beyond,
And love shall be your lantern flame

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents / Guardians
Celebrating 80 Years of St Cuthbert’s Catholic School 1938 - 2018
This week we celebrate St Cuthbert’s Catholic School’s 80th Birthday with a whole school Mass at the Church of the Incarnation to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Mary. We will be joined on the day by the Presentation Sisters including Sister Majella Kelly and Sister Monica Shelverton. Sister Norah Donnelly and Sister Pat Kingsley are unable to attend and will visit us at another time. Parents and friends of the St Cuthbert’s Catholic School Community are welcome to join us for Mass at 9.30am.
After Mass, students will gather at school for the cutting of a special birthday cake to celebrate the day. This will be followed by an afternoon of fun activities.
A little bit of history
In 1938, a one room wooden school named for St Cuthbert was built in Lindisfarne under the auspices of the Presentation Sisters for an enrolment of 32 students. The building was used as a school during the week and as a church on the weekends. This remained the case until 1967 when the Church of the Incarnation was built. For the first 18 years, the Sisters travelled to and from Lindisfarne each day, initially from St Mary’s convent and later from Bellerive.
Eventually an 8-roomed house was purchased at 43 Malunna Road as a resident for the sisters. This was replaced in 1960 by the convent that we now call Presentation House.
In the 1960’s a separate brick building comprising 2 classrooms was added. This was followed by a further 5 classrooms, an art and craft room, Principal’s office, staff room and a new toilet block.
In 1975 our current hall was built along with two smaller rooms and a canteen. Further renovations and refurbishment occurred in 1984 with the addition of a new staff room, Principal’s Office, Secretary’s Office and Library. Sadly, at around this time the original building known as “The Green Building” was demolished due to its poor condition and to provide additional playground area.
In more recent times we have seen the establishment of our Kindergarten in its current location and the construction of two dedicated Early Years classrooms as part of the “Building Education Revolution” in the mid 2000’s.
It’s hard to believe that from these meagre beginnings our school has evolved into a modern educational facility it is today catering for an enrolment of 270 students.
From its first intake of pupils in 1938 to 2018, St Cuthbert’s has provided a quality education for thousands of children on Hobart’s Eastern Shore. We are indebted to the dedication and service of the Presentation Sisters and to the many teachers and staff who have taught and worked at St Cuthbert’s during this time. They have all followed in the footsteps of Nano Nagle and answered her call to …

Orientation and Step Up Day- Wednesday 4th December
All students will take part in our Orientation and Step Up Day on Tuesday 4th of December. This allows all students to not only move to their 2019 classes, but meet their teachers, classmates and become familiar with the learning environment. All families receive a letter on this day informing them who their classroom teacher will be for the 2019 school year. Transition and information handover processes continue as normal.
Triathlon
The Hobart School Triathlon Challenge has had to be postponed due to a severe weather forecast.
Night of the Notables
On Thursday 29th of November 2018, our School will entertain 54 notable and eminent people as the Grade 5/6 showcase their ‘Night of the Notables night’ in the hall. There will be a variety of notable people there including: Archimedes, General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Lady Olave Baden-Powell and Oprah Winfrey to name a few. The students have been working very hard for twelve weeks and their learning displays and costumes are starting to take shape. The ‘Night of the Notables’ is very much like a ‘trade show’, with students occupying booths and taking on the persona of someone who is notable for the night. The event starts at 4.15 pm on the softfall in front of the Office and continues in the hall until 5.45 pm. All are welcome.
