Prayer and Reflection
Advent Season
Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.
We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.
We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.
We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.
We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.
We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.
To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Guardians
During the four weeks of Advent, we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth through prayer and reflection. We contemplate the First Coming of Jesus as Saviour, and anticipate his promised Second Coming. And amid the flurry of Christmas preparations, we look for practical ways to observe the holiness of the season in our everyday lives.
Deputy Principal Appointments
It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Mrs. Rachel Kelly as our new Deputy Principal commencing January 2019.
Rachel Kelly is currently Assistant Principal: Learning and Teaching (2008 - 2018) at Corpus Christi Catholic School. During this period Rachel has taken on Acting Principal responsibilities including a full year as Co-Acting Principal (2017). Prior to this, Rachel was Assistant Principal: Religious Education (2006 - 2007) at Holy Rosary Catholic School.
The new Deputy Principal role in primary schools has been created to work closely with the Principal, and together, they will form the senior leadership team in our schools. They will provide both strategic and day-to-day leadership of mission, evangelisation and learning within the school community to ensure the goals of Catholic Education Tasmania are achieved.
I know that you will join with me in warmly welcoming Rachel to the St Cuthbert’s Catholic School community.
We also congratulate Mrs. Di O’Rourke who has been appointed Deputy Principal of John Paul II Catholic School. Di has been a much loved and greatly respected member of our community these past four years. There will opportunities to thank and acknowledge Di for her outstanding contribution to our school when she returns from her travels overseas. In the mean-time we wish Di every success as she begins this exciting new chapter of her educational journey.

Leave
Mr. Lachlan Marsh will be taking 12 months leave from St Cuthbert’s Catholic School to take up a Religious Education Coordinator position at MacKillop College. We wish Lachlan every success with this exciting new development.
Orientation Morning
We had a lot of very excited teachers and students at St Cuthbert’s on Tuesday morning as they gathered in their new classes for 2019. There was a really positive feel around the entire school as we welcomed new students and new teachers to our school community. We look forward with great anticipation to a very successful 2019.
Class Structures 2019
We are very excited about our plans for next year particularly in the manner in which we are structuring classes and how we are providing support for students within these classes. Our class groupings for 2019 are as follows: Kindergarten, Prep, three Grade 1/2’s, three Grade 3/4’s, two Grade 5’s and Grade 6. We have made a conscious decision to support students in the Early Years and will be implementing a co-teacher model in our Prep class, having an extra teacher on class on Tuesday’s and Wednesday as well as a support teacher on Thursday’s and Fridays at key learning times. We have also purposefully kept our Grade 1/2 class sizes small to better target and support students at this Grade level. Our Grade 3/4 classes are similar to this year with an average of 25 students in each class. In the upper primary we have straight classes in Grade 5 and 6.
Congratulations
We congratulate Sarah Duggan on her marriage to Josh Langworthy last week at Lake St Clair. On behalf of the St Cuthbert’s School community we wish Mrs. Langworthy and her husband, Josh, every prayer and blessing as they begin a long and happy life together.
Update on Change to Catholic Education Tasmania
In 2019 you will notice some changes to the branding of Catholic education in Tasmania.
‘Catholic Education Tasmania’ will be utilised as the official name for our system from the commencement of 2019. Catholic Education Tasmania encompasses our schools and colleges, the Commission, and the Office.
This change has been implemented to provide consistency with external communications and increase recognition of the Catholic education sector in Tasmania within the broader community. External communication channels will be updated with this branding including a redeveloped CET website, career advertising, and promotional advertising.
Changes in governance structures within the system have also led to the Tasmanian Catholic Education Commission rebranded to Catholic Education Commission Tasmania from 2019. The TCEO will retain its Tasmanian Catholic Education Office naming.
Triathlon
Well done to all students from Grades 4, 5 and 6, who represented St Cuthbert’s at the Schools Triathlon Challenge at Bellerive Beach yesterday.
Night of the Notables
Congratulations to everyone involved in preparing our students for the "Night of the Notables." What a great event! This is my first experience of seeing this event and I came away suitably impressed! A huge thank to Mr. Sandy Clark and our Grade 5/6 team for giving our students such a wonderful learning opportunity.
Lindisfarne Carols
It was wonderful to see so many of our choir members representing their school at the Lindisfarne Carols by the Bay at Simmons Park last Saturday Night. You all sang beautifully and looked fantastic in your Christmas attire! A big thank you to Ms. Ruth Freeman and Mrs. Katherine Dobbie for being in attendance and coordinating this event.

2019 Grade Six Caritas Leaders – Just Leadership Day
On Tuesday 27th November, I accompanied a number of Grade Five students to St Mary’s College to attend a Just Leadership Day hosted by Caritas Australia. The students participated in several activities that helped them develop their leadership skills and work towards a more just and equal society.
Students also developed ideas for fundraising to support Cartias Australia in 2019 including Project Compassion during Lent. The theme for 2019 is ‘Give Lent 100%’.
The following students will be our Grade Six Caritas Leaders next year:
Zackary Oates, Cooper Cutcliffe, Isabelle Potter, Natasha Johnston, Leah Gard-Spaulding, Katie Simpson, and Taylah Jenkin.
