Prayer and Reflection

Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

St. Francis of Assisi

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome Back

Welcome back to another exciting year at St Cuthbert’s Catholic School. I trust everyone has had a great break over the summer and has had an opportunity to spend valuable time with family and friends.

It was wonderful to see so many happy and excited students returning to school last Thursday. The beginning of the year is always a time of great anticipation and expectation and there was a real buzz in the air with everyone catching up on all of the holiday news!

I am delighted to report to you that our students have settled well into their new classes and are quickly acquainting themselves with their new classmates, teachers and learning teams.

We welcome our new staff members for 2019. Mrs. Rachel Kelly as Deputy Principal, Mrs. Louise Zegveld and Miss Meg Williams in Grade 1/2, Mrs. Andrea Watt and Mr. Ethan Brighella in Grade 3/4, and Mrs. Rebecca Cooray, Mr. Steve Bentley and Ms. Anita Cranfield in Grade 5. We also welcome Mrs. Karen Charles and Mr. Josh McGuinness as Teacher Assistants. Mr. Matt McGuinness has been appointed as our AFL trainee for 2019 and will be assisting Mr. Sandy Clark throughout the year. We also welcome back Mrs. Brigitte Gralak from parental leave.

I look forward to working with everyone again in 2019. In the words of Pope Paul VI, I encourage you to live life to the limit, every minute of every day and to make the most of all the opportunities that are presented to you throughout the year.

Acknowledgement

A special thank you to Mr John Sawyer for all of the work he has put in over the holidays to ensure that our school is looking its very best at this time of the year. He has done a wonderful job reviving and restoring our grassed areas. Classrooms and pavements have been re-painted and our Adventure Playground has been given a makeover! Very impressive.

We also thank Mrs Karen Sawyer and Mrs Allison Norman for all of the administrative work that they have done to ensure that we all get off to as smooth a start as possible.

Thank you

Thank you to our Parents and Friends for organizing our Welcome Morning Tea for new families last Thursday.

North Melbourne Visit
This week on Friday, St Cuthbert's will be visited by some members of the North Melbourne Senior Men's Team.  This is a fantastic opportunity.  The players will have a kick with our students at lunch and then will be part of a Q and A session in the Hall.  We thank Josh McGuinness and the North Melbourne Football Club for making this possible.

School Hats

A reminder that as per our SunSmart Policy all students are required to wear their school hat in Terms 1 and 4 for outside play, PE and excursions.

PBS News

What is PBS at St Cuthbert’s Catholic School

What is School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)? SWPBS is not a program, curriculum, intervention or practice but is a decision-making framework that guides selection and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioural practices for improving outcomes for all students. School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a research driven and evidence based process that was developed over 20 years ago and is now internationally recognised. At St Cuthbert’s we have 3 Expectations: BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE AND BE YOUR BEST. We have whole class social and emotional lessons through Circle Time where we explore what these 3 Expectations look like in all school settings.

We have very high expectations of our students doing their best, being respectful and being safe in every school setting; expectations that we believe student’s will benefit from and develop grit and a strong sense character as a learner and individual. If parents/carers wish to discuss our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support please feel free to contact the school.

Wellbeing for our school environment

At St Cuthbert’s we aim this year to reduce the amount of waste we see at our school. One significant way to help is to try and pack waste free lunch boxes for your children (have them help where possible to help educate). I know this can take extra time but in the long run it will save you money and help our planet.
