Student Leadership Formation Day
Last week I had the privilege of attending our Leadership Formation Day for our Grade 6 students. One of our priorities as a school this year is to provide authentic leadership opportunities for our student leaders. The first part of this process is to ensure that our students understand leadership in the Catholic context with particular reference to a servant model of leadership as demonstrated by Jesus Christ.
Throughout the day our students had the opportunity to listen to our Parish Priest, Fr. Richard Ross, the Deputy Director of Catholic Education. Mr Sean Gill and aspiring AFL draftee and a new member of the St Cuthbert’s Catholic School community, Matt McGuinness.
Fr Richard spoke to our students about their capacity to give of themselves and to serve others through their actions. Mr Gill talked to the students about being authentic and the importance of relationship and connection. He challenged the students to reflect on the type of legacy that they would leave at St Cuthbert’s and to be people that really make a difference. He referred to Pope Francis as a great modern-day example of what it means to be a servant leader particularly for the manner in which he displays, love, humanity, right use of power and spiritual leadership.
Matt spoke to us about the highs and lows of what it means to achieve at the elite level of sport. He gave examples of the challenges, disappointments and determination required to achieve at this level.
On behalf of our Grade 6 students I would like to thank Mr Fabrizio and Mrs Chivers for organizing such a great day for our new leaders.
Music Teacher
In our last newsletter I advised that Ms Claire Williams would be teaching Music at St Cuthbert’s in 2019. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Claire is unable to take up the position. Mrs Louise Volkmann has been appointed to the position and will begin classes this week. Louise has taught in a number of our Catholic Schools in recent times and is also teaching Music at Richmond Primary School this year. I know you will join with me in making Louise feel very welcome at our school.
Long Service Leave
Mrs. Andrea Watt will be taking Long Service Leave for the remainder of Term 1 and will be travelling overseas with her family.
Ms Hui Tocker has been employed to teach Grade 3/4 Blue in Mrs Watt’s absence. Ms Tocker is an experienced educator and has taught for many years at St Aloysius College.
I know you will join with me in welcoming Ms Tocker to the St Cuthbert’s community. We wish Andrea “Bon Voyage” and look forward to hearing her travel stories when she returns to school at the beginning of Term 2.
Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to all of our students who participated in this year’s Swimming Carnival. It was wonderful to see some very enthusiastic competition and some excellent individual performances.
A big thank you to Mr Sandy Clark for once again doing an outstanding job with the organisation and running of the carnival. Thank you also to staff and parents who assisted as marshals, scorers, timekeepers and judges.
Goal Setting Interviews
We had an excellent attendance at our Goal Setting interviews last week. If you were unable to attend do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment to catch-up.
St Patrick’s Day
This year we will celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Monday, March 18. Students are encouraged to wear something “Green” and will participate in our “St Patrick’s Day Parade” at our Monday morning gathering. Students who choose to participate are asked to bring a Gold Coin donation for our Caritas appeal. Parents and Friends are most welcome to attend.
Parking and Pick-Up
Could all parents and guardians please comply to the following protocols in regard to the pick-up and drop off of students at St Cuthbert’s Catholic School:
Please ensure that the NO PARKING zone that is sign-posted outside the school on Corinna Road is strictly observed. This is a drop-off/pick-up zone only.
Cars must not be left unattended in the zone.
Parents are asked to drive around the block if they cannot see their child ready to be picked up.
At pick-up time could all drivers please enter Corinna Road from Lincoln Street and exit at Lowanna Rd. (essentially making Corinna Road one way at this time of the day)
There is no parent parking in the cul-de-sac in Moirunna Road near the Kindergarten and Prep classrooms.
Please be respectful and courteous to our neighbours by not parking over driveways.
Your cooperation and understanding of these protocols is greatly appreciated.
