Commissioning Liturgy

Last Thursday, we celebrated our Commissioning Liturgy for 2025, where we asked for God’s blessing upon our school year, our staff, students, and families. During the liturgy, our Lantern Leaders and Term One House Leaders were commissioned, and the badges for our Grade Six class were blessed. In a beautiful moment, Father Mark also blessed our wonderful Principal, Mr. Donnelly, as well as our brand-new school candle. The staff of St. Cuthbert’s were commissioned in their roles to educate, lead, support, and guide our students.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our families who were able to join us, to Father Mark and Father Kasun for celebrating our special school liturgy with us, and to our students for their reverence and sincere participation.

Launch of Project Compassion

On Monday morning, our Grade 1/2 students gathered for prayer and were joined by Leanne and Nicole, who shared insights about Lent, Caritas, and Project Compassion. We are grateful to Leanne and Nicole for coming to speak with us and for raising awareness about Caritas Australia and the important work they do. Later this term, we will be supporting Project Compassion by wearing purple for Lent and holding a coin line to raise funds for this incredible charity.

Shrove Tuesday

On Shrove Tuesday, our whole school came together to celebrate the day before the Liturgical season of Lent with a special pancake-sharing event. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday and marks the final day of feasting before the season of Lent begins. In the Christian tradition, it is a time for reflection and preparation, as Lent is a period of penance and self-discipline. The name "Shrove" comes from the practice of being "shriven" or absolved of sins, a custom in the days leading up to Lent. Traditionally, people would use up rich foods like eggs, milk, and sugar to prepare for the fasting and sacrifices of Lent. This is why pancakes are often associated with the day— as a way of using up these ingredients.

Pancakes were cooked for all staff and students, providing an opportunity for everyone to share in a mini-meal together. We are grateful for the involvement of our Lantern Leaders and Grade Six students, who played a pivotal role in helping organise and serve the pancakes. A huge thank you goes out to Mr. Zegveld, Cam, and Ian Potter for their assistance in cooking and ensuring the pancakes were ready for sharing in time. A very special thank you also goes to a kind mum who generously made pancakes for our students and staff with food intolerances, ensuring everyone could participate in this celebration.

It was a wonderful way to come together as a school community before the beginning of Lent, and we truly appreciate everyone’s contribution to making the day a success.
