Principal's Report
Welcome Back
We’re excited to welcome everyone back for Term 4 and hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break.
Over the holidays, significant progress began on both our building project and the playground refurbishment. While we had anticipated the demolition of Presentation House before the start of the term, unexpected delays involving a decommissioned power pole set us back slightly. We are hopeful that everything will be back on track in the coming weeks.
Missionaries of Hope
This week, I had the great pleasure of accompanying two of our Grade 6 leaders to a special Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in celebration of Mission Month.
Archbishop Tony led the 2025 Mission Mass, joined by Vicar General Fr Shammi Perera, Fr Steven Smith, Deacons Michael Hangan and Michael Smith, and Catholic Mission representative Rachel Prince. The Mass brought together students from Catholic schools across southern Tasmania.
Archbishop Tony shared a powerful message:
"Today, in this Mission Mass, we remember that God’s dream is bigger than any one of us.
It stretches from Hobart to Zambia — from your schools to the streets of Lusaka — from your home to every corner of the world.
Let this Mission Mass be the start of a new fire — be young people of the Church who set the world alight — as missionaries of hope with hearts on fire for Jesus."
During the Mass, we reflected on the importance of our attitudes and how we can strive to be our best selves. We were guided by the words of the Gospel, particularly the Beatitudes, which offer timeless wisdom on how to live with compassion, humility, and hope.
You might like to explore a more contemporary version of the Beatitudes as a way to connect with their message in today’s world...
Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves; they will always have entertainment.
Blessed are those who can distinguish between a mountain and a molehill; they will save themselves a lot of trouble.
Blessed are those who can rest and sleep without looking for excuses; they will become wise.
Blessed are those who are intelligent enough not to take themselves too seriously; they will be appreciated.
Blessed are you if you can look seriously at small things and peacefully at serious things; you will go far in life.
Blessed are you if you can admire a smile and forget a scowl; your path will be sunlit.
Blessed are you if you can always interpret the attitudes of others with good will, even when appearances are to the contrary; you may seem naïve, but that is the price of charity.
Blessed are those who think before acting and who laugh before thinking; they will avoid foolish mistakes.
Blessed are you if you know how to be silent and smile, even when you are interrupted, contradicted or walked on; the gospel is beginning to take root in your heart.
Blessed are you especially if you know how to recognize the Lord in all those you meet; you have found the true light, true wisdom.
Fr Joseph Folliet
We look forward to another great term at St Cuthbert’s!

St Cuthbert’s Feast Day
Last Friday, we were reminded in the most beautiful way of how special our school truly is. Our day began with a Liturgy celebrating our belated Feast Day, where we reflected on what it means to be Pilgrims of Hope, walking in the footsteps of St. Cuthbert and Nano Nagle. During the celebration, we were delighted to announce our 2025 St. Cuthbert Scholar — Hope Lorkin. Congratulations Hope! A very deserving recipient of this honour.
After Recess, we boarded the buses and made our way to Richmond for our school pilgrimage. Staff and students journeyed together, pausing at special points along the way to reflect and pray, before finishing at St John’s Catholic Church — one of Tasmania’s designated holy places this year. We were also fortunate to visit the original schoolhouse where the Presentation Sisters first taught in Tasmania. At the commemorative cross for the Sisters, everyone placed down a pebble representing their burdens and worries, symbolising the laying down of what weighs on their hearts.
It was truly a beautiful and faith-filled day. Despite a little wind, the weather was kind, and our hearts were full.

Presentation of the St. Cuthbert’s Scholar Award
The St. Cuthbert’s Scholar Award is proudly sponsored by the Mogford, Lucas, and Potter families in loving memory of their beloved son, brother, and uncle, Nathan.
Nathan was a passionate and dedicated educator who devoted himself to helping students overcome both academic and personal challenges. A former student of St. Cuthbert’s, Nathan discovered his calling to teach later in life — and although his time in the classroom was short, it was clear that teaching was where he truly belonged. His compassion, patience, and belief in every child left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Today, we honour Nathan’s memory and his commitment to education by presenting the St. Cuthbert’s Scholar Award. This award recognises a student who embodies the same qualities Nathan showed: hard work, resilience, kindness, and a positive spirit. This student gives their best in all they do, faces challenges with courage, and consistently shows care and inclusion towards others.
Awarded to Hope Lorkin
Hope is a kind, caring, and empathetic member of the St Cuthbert’s community. She is loyal and protective of those who struggle to fight their own battles, always offering a helping hand and guiding those around her with compassion and quiet strength.
Hope approaches every challenge with determination and grace, showing remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. She picks herself up when things get tough and continues to strive to be her best, inspiring those around her with her positivity and perseverance.
Her joy for life, quick wit, and love of a good dad joke bring laughter and light to those fortunate enough to know her. Hope is a true role model and someone who embodies the values of St Cuthbert’s through her hard work, empathy, and unwavering kindness.
We are incredibly proud of you, Hope.
Congratulations on being named the 2025 St Cuthbert’s Scholar.

Art News
Last term the Grade 3 to 6 classes looked at the work of Alma Thomas, an American artist best known for her circular dash paintings. We looked at how she creates her work and discussed how her work is similar to Indigenous dot paintings. We were really surprised at how relaxing this lesson was and the finished pieces are magnificent.

Sporting Achievements

During the school holidays the following St Cuthbert's students attended the National School Futsal Championships in Brisbane from Monday 29th Sept - Thursday 2nd Oct.
Harvey Johnson, George McCallum, Henry Munnings, Ari Cassidy, Hamish Davie, Tilly Ross and Harold Jr Harold-Horton.
The team ended the tournament with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses, but most importantly their sportsmanship and enjoyment were second to none!
Harold was named in the "All Star" team for the Under 10 boys (meaning he was in the top 10 players in Australia for this age group).
A big congratulations to both Tilly and Harold who were also selected in the Australian squad to tour Malaysia next April, based on their outstanding performances in the tournament.
A phenomenal effort! Our school community are very proud of you all!

Congratulations to Grade 3 student Imogen Followes, who competed in the Inaugural Under 10 Green Ball Tennis Nationals at Henley South Tennis Club in South Australia from 29 September to 3 October 2025.
The tournament featured 32 boys and 32 girls from around the country competing in both singles and doubles events. Imogen had a wonderful experience, learning, improving her game and making lots of new friends.
Imogen was recognised with a Spirit of Tennis Award for her outstanding sportsmanship and effort during the tournament.
Well done Imogen!

P&F News
The Parents and Friends Association concluded Term 3 on a high note, celebrating both community and footy spirit while selling over 300 egg and bacon roll combos. Freshly brewed coffee, kindly provided by Bean and Leaf was also enjoyed by many.
A sincere thank you goes to Mardi for coordinating this successful event, to all the family volunteers who assisted, and to our generous donors — the Tzamarias family (IGA Risdon Vale), with contributions from Juicy Isle, Tibaldi, Tas Fresh, and PDF, as well as Johnno’s Tasmania and Banjo’s Lindisfarne for their additional support. We’d also like to thank our wonderful school staff, including Karen Sawyer and Mr Zegveld, and all the school families who came out to support. All juice box collections were recycled, with further donations made to the Vinnies Winter Appeal.
Looking ahead to this term, the P&F is proud to be supporting the school dance. In addition to our contribution towards event costs, we are also launching our major raffle fundraiser with some great prizes donated by PRD Hobart. Tickets are now available via Qkr!, and we are pleased to share that the office staff have enabled a new feature allowing multiple ticket names to be added within a single transaction — perfect for friends and family purchasing together.
Please save the date for our second-last meeting of the year, to be held on Wednesday 29th at 7:00pm in the school office. We encourage all families to come along and be part of the discussion as we wrap up another busy year.
