Dear Parents and Guardians
We wish all of our mothers and grandmothers a very special day this weekend. Thank you for everything that you do for our students and their families. I hope that this Sunday you are deservedly spoilt and surrounded by friends and loved ones.
Mothers Day Stall
A big thank you to our Parents and Friends for organising another very successful Mother’s Day stall. It was great to see so many parents helping out on the day. There is always a lot of enthusiasm and excitement for the Mother’s Day stall at St Cuthbert’s.
Harmony Day
Thank you to all of the families who shared information and food about their culture at our recent Harmony Day celebration. It was a wonderful example of the diversity that exists within our school community. A special thank you to Ms Chantel Mitchell for organising and coordinating this event.

Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month – Supporting Henry!
The month of May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, and we are proud to support one of our own — Henry Pretyman, a kind and courageous Kindergarten student who lives with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This year, Henry has been chosen as the Masked Ambassador for Cystic Fibrosis Tasmania—a fantastic honour!
To help raise awareness about CF, Henry will be participating in the 2.7km event at the City to Casino Fun Run on Saturday, May 18th. It would be wonderful to see as many of our students as possible running alongside him, dressed in red in support. To register, simply visit the City to Casino website https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tnvKCP7x6nh4VDZnczfpfxlorP?domain=citytocasino25.grassrootz.com
Start Time: 7:55am (target aged 12 and under, children must be accompanied by an adult)
Start Location: Salamanca Place, Hobart, opposite the Supreme Court steps.
Finish Line: Wrest Point Casino
In addition to the fun run, we will also be holding a “Red Day” at school on Tuesday May 20th. On this day, students can come dressed in red (the official CF awareness colour) in exchange for a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go directly to Cystic Fibrosis Tasmania to support ongoing research and care programs.
Recently, our staff attended a professional learning day focused on Cystic Fibrosis. We were inspired to learn about the exciting breakthroughs in research and improvements in care that are making a real difference in the lives of those with CF.
Let’s show our support for Henry and raise awareness for this important cause!
The Lantern Award
Each term at St. Cuthbert’s, we celebrate the Lantern Award—a special honour given in the tradition of our foundress, Nano Nagle. Known as the "Lady of the Lantern," Nano walked the streets of Cork, Ireland by lantern light, bringing hope, education, and care to those most in need. Her life was guided not just by words, but by action—“deeds, not words.”
The Lantern Award recognises students who, like Nano, shine their light in quiet but powerful ways. These are students who:
- Show kindness and compassion to others
- Are always ready to help, without being asked
- Demonstrate leadership through their actions
- Encourage and include those around them
- Act as a light for others to follow
These students may not always seek the spotlight, but their actions speak clearly. They inspire their peers and make our school a better, brighter place.
We proudly congratulate our Term 1 and 2 Lantern Award recipients: James Alsford, Rocco Gazzignato, and Jagger Ross. These boys have shown outstanding character, consistently offering help without seeking recognition and always looking out for those around them.
Well done, boys — you truly are beacons of light in our school community!

Debating
St Cuthbert’s debating teams are busy debating after school on Wednesdays. Our teams visit schools around the area, making their arguments and defending their positions. The opposing team also try to ask some tricky questions. Debating is open to students in Grade 5/6 and students plan, write and deliver their arguments in front of a panel who judge them on both the strength of their arguments and the manner in which they speak. Our thanks go to Ally Wheatley who coaches the teams and accompanies them as they compete in competitions.
Assessment and Reporting at St Cuthbert’s (including school reports)
You will notice some changes to reports when they are shared at the end of this term. Last year we received very positive feedback from parents and teachers about the Learning Conferences teachers held alongside parents, where discussion was focussed around progress in Maths and English and work samples were shared. Both teachers and families felt the rich conversations meant that everyone had a shared understanding of a child's strengths and challenges. We will continue with this model this year with learning conferences. Conferences will take place on June 10th and 11th and again towards the end of Term 3. These conferences will replace the written comments in a report to ensure that the feedback you receive on your child’s learning is timely, specific, relevant and focused on future opportunities for growth. The overall level of achievement for each subject will still be shared in the same way as previously.
If you have any comments or questions around the school's assessment and reporting procedures your child’s class teacher will be happy to discuss this with you.
Katherine Dobbie
Last term the Grade 5 and 6 classes looked at the work of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist best known for his abstract paintings. Art that is abstract does not show things that are recognisable such as people, objects or landscapes. Instead artists use colours, shapes and textures to achieve their effect. We then used collage to create our own Piet Mondrian inspired art works.
We warmly invite all old and new members to attend this terms first meeting Wednesday 14th May. Meet at the Staffroom for a 7pm start to wrap up at 8pm - we look forward to seeing you there.
