Newsletter 21st May 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians
We have had a very busy couple of weeks at St Cuthbert’s:
John Maddin - Music Incursion
The John Maddin Music Incursion is always a big hit at St Cuthbert’s! Students from Grades 3- 6 had a wow of a time playing an assortment of weird and wonderful instruments, all made by John from recycled materials. A special concert was held at the end of the day with our students performing a variety of pieces in front of the whole school. The concert also featured some very memorable performances from St Cuthbert’s staff!

Cross Country
The school cross country was hosted in perfect weather at Geilston Bay. We were so lucky with the warm temperatures and settled conditions. Parents and staff offered fantastic support, cheering enthusiastically for the students as they participated in their races. The MacKillop students were particularly helpful and a special big thank you to Mrs Louise Wright for helping with the adjudication. The new house marquees splashed some colour along the track, and were a great addition to the carnival. It was a wonderful day. Thanks to Moto Vecchia for coming along as well.
Well done to the Presentation House for their big win! Scores as follows:
First Place - Presentation (602 points)
Second Place - Rogers (544 points)
Third Place - Flynn (388 points)

Parents and Friends
I would like to acknowledge and thank our Parents and Friends for generously supporting the purchase of additional teaching resources across the school with a donation of $4,000.00 at our recent P and F meeting. The funding will be used to purchase IT equipment, new nativity costumes, mathematics resources and resources for the Art room.
I am also delighted to announce, thanks to the support of the P and F, that our whole school dance program is back on again this year! The dance program runs over a 10 week period and will culminate in a whole school performance at MacKillop College on Monday, November 3.
School Zone Speed Limit
A reminder to parents and guardians to comply with the 40km/hr speed limit in the school zone. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.
Celebrating the Legacy of Nano Nagle: Reflections from the NEAA Conference
Last week, Miss Richardson and I had the privilege of attending the Nagle Education Alliance of Australia (NEAA) Conference, held over three inspiring days in the beautiful surrounds of Star of the Sea College, Brighton and the Rendezvous Hotel in Melbourne. The conference brought together staff from Presentation schools across the country, united in a shared mission to carry forward the charism of Nano Nagle.
The conference began with a moving prayer liturgy honouring 250 years of the Presentation Sisters and the enduring legacy of Nano Nagle. This set a deeply reflective tone as delegates explored how Nano's vision continues to shape Catholic education today. It was also a great honour to have been asked to participate in the liturgy.
Throughout the conference, participants were invited to consider how Nano’s legacy of compassion and justice is alive in our schools - through outreach programs, commitment to caring for the marginalised, and daily acts of kindness. One key theme echoed across the sessions: to truly care for others, we must also care for ourselves. This gentle reminder resonated with all in attendance, especially in the context of the demands of teaching and school life.
A highlight of the conference was the opportunity to hear from the delightful Presentation Sister Ann from Ireland, who offered heartfelt insights into Nano’s life, her courage, and her transformative approach to education. Her stories brought Nano’s spirit vividly to life and reminded all of the sacred responsibility and privilege it is to be part of a Presentation school community.
The gathering was also a time of joy and connection - filled with camaraderie, music, and memorable performances from Catholic schools across Melbourne. A special dinner at the Sealife Aquarium provided a unique setting to continue building relationships and sharing ideas.
Above all, the conference served as a powerful reminder of what it means to go “one step beyond” in our mission - to walk humbly, act justly, and live by Nano’s enduring motto: Not words, but deeds. Miss Richardson and I have returned inspired and energised, ready to continue nurturing Nano’s vision in our own school community.

5/6 RE News
In Grade 5/6, we've been exploring the lives and leadership of some important figures in the Catholic Church - Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV. Pope Francis has taught us about love, humility, and caring for others, especially the poor and the planet. We’ve learned how he led with kindness and reminds us to build peace and show mercy in our everyday lives. Pope Leo XIV has already made such a big difference to our world. Since becoming the new Pope, his desire is for a united church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world.
Through our lessons, activities, and discussions, we’ve seen how Church leaders from the past and present help shape the way we live our faith. We’re inspired to think about what kind of leaders we want to be in our families, schools, and communities.
Assessment and Reporting
Teachers are busy preparing for Learning Conferences on June 10th and 11th. The conferences form an essential part of our assessment and feedback cycle and all parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Work samples will be shared which will give you insightful information into your child’s progress and future learning goals in English and Maths. These meetings will replace the general comment in the mid year report which will now be a brief summary of learning behaviours.
Run For Henry
It was a cold and frosty morning when a group of parents, teachers and students gathered together to run for Henry in the City to Casino 2.7km race. Henry is one of our Kindergarten students and is this years ambassador to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. A well as a wonderful community event, this was a great fundraising opportunity for the 65 Roses foundation that supports families who live with Cystic Fibrosis. You may have even spotted us on the TV news.
Our Go Red for Henry Day was well supported and raised important funds for Cystic Fibrosis. Students all wore red and met Henry as he came into classrooms to collect your donations (which I’m told were very heavy!)

Following on from our last newsletter we would like to congratulate our 5/6 Debating teams who both won their contests against students from The Hutchins School. I was lucky enough to visit one of their planning sessions to get a small insight into the way the teams work collaboratively to plan their arguments and their responses to their opponents likely counter arguments. We wish them good luck in their future competitions and thank Mrs Wheatley for coaching the team and the parents who provide transport and in person support at the events.
